The Auburn Bowls Club was formed in 1886. It has had a long history in Boroondara being originally established as a form of recreation for his employees by Augustus Fritch of the Fritch-Holzer brick-making firm in Hawthorn. The original land is still owned by the Club. It has been added to and parts sold off over time. The all-weather synthetic surface has just been replaced with new Tiger Turf and the grass green will be replaced in due course. With the new synthetic green, Auburn offers bowling on one of the state’s best surfaces. The clubhouse has also been extended with a very comfortable bar/lounge area and a spacious BBQ area overlooking the synthetic green. Auburn Bowls Club is one of Boroondara's best kept secrets. It is located in a secluded residential area in East Hawthorn. It is financially sound and its long-term plans will ensure that it remains so. The 2009-2010 season had two teams in the finals for their divisions and the top side Division Four was promoted to the next higher division. In the past year, Auburn appointed Noel Waite as coach and the improvement in player's skills bodes well for the future. For their endeavours, Noel and secretary David Pisterman have the distinction of being the Over 60’s Victorian State Pairs Champions. At the other end of the age scale, one of their gun bowlers is Brendan Gallagher who at 15 is the youngest member. Like many clubs, numbers have declined, but recently there has been a gradual resurgence in membership. There are many social members; some young professions from the local area. Many new members have taken up the game both at a social and competition level. On Thursday evenings, there is a Happy Hour from 5:30 to 6.30 pm which is always well attended by members and visitors. On Thursday and Friday, evenings during daylight saving, visitors are welcome to view the facilities and "have a roll". Bowls and training are available and the only pre-requisite is to have flat soled shoes (no heels) or bare feet and the desire to have a bit of fun. Most are very surprised at the level of skill needed to play the game and many come back to try again. The club's facilities are available to the public and many functions are held throughout the year. The facilities are also available to corporates and business in the area for presentations, training sessions or a casual, relaxed social occasion. Lawn bowls is probably the best value for money of any sport. Membership at Auburn is $50 a year plus affiliation fees for those who seek to participate in the RVBA or VLBA events. Come for a social game – you will be most welcome.
