New Season starts Soon PDF Print

Welcome, All Auburn Bowls Club members and visitors to our site

With the new season almost upon us we had our Annual Opening of the Green on Sunday the 28th August.

A great turn out, with major sponsors Christopher Russell Real Estate, Tiger Turf executives and representatives from Bowls Victoria Executive and our Group 13 Chairman in attendance.

After the formal proceedings members adjourned for a brief practice and fellowship afterwards at the bar.

We had a brief get together with our Coach Noel Waite reminding us of our objectives for the coming pennant season, and he reminded us all that the secret of success is to practice, practice, practice, and the more you do the better you get.

There are to be two practice matches over the next few weeks against the MCC Bowls club and an inter Club practice game.

Saturday pennant practice starting

Sept 11th in Club uniform, 1:00pm start Div 3 at the MCC and Div 7 at home.

Sat the 18th in Club uniform 1:00pm start Inter club practice.

Tuesday Pennant practice dates are as follows

Tuesday 7th from 11:00am BYO lunch

Tuesday 14th from 11:00am BYO lunch

Tuesday 21st 10:30am for 11:00pm start Auburn Vs Richmond Union BYO lunch

I am please to report that the newly installed 2 water tanks (22,000 Litre capacities each) are now filling (over ¼ full) with the winter/spring rains. It will be interesting to see how much water we actually save over a full year.

The synthetic green is proving to be a popular place to be most afternoons with members availing themselves of the all weather ability of having a game even if there are a few light showers about.

The committee’s agreement for us to acquire new dark green trousers, (with the Auburn name on the left leg) for this season to complete our team Auburn uniform has been met with approval by all and the bowlers agreeing to the payment of $20 and the Clubs subsidy of $25.00 per pair of trousers.

They are expected to be available prior to the start of the Pennant season.

The Clubs annual hand book is currently with the printers and this is also expected to be with members in the next couple of weeks.

Happenings around the Club PDF Print

The ABC is going forward with a number of up coming event for the new season, the first of which has been a working bee held on Sunday 11 July.

Some 20 members attended and achieved a huge result both inside, around, and on top of the Club house and it's surrounds. It's amazing what can be achieved with a bit of planning and a willing group ready to pitch in. My thanks to all who attended.

The next big happening is the AGM to be held on the 25thy July and all current financial members are invited to attend.

There will be the opportunity to welcome in the new management team for 2010 - 2011 and enjoy some fellowship afterwards.

Next will be the opening of the Green date to be announced soon (watch this space)

Last but not by any means least, will be the 2 practice games Coach Noal Waite is organising again against MCC and Altona. These dates are yet to be finalised as well but Noel assures the Club it's not far off being resolved.

Auburn Bowls Club in the news again PDF Print

Last Friday and Saturday of the long ANZAC weekend our bowlers Noel Waite and pairs partner Brendan Gallagher were to do the Club and themselves very proud.

In trying conditions during the Champions week on both Friday and Saturday they took on the best of the Open Victorian Pairs competitors and were in the State final when they unfortunately met their match.

“Affectionately dubbed 'The Walrus and The Pup', Waite and Gallagher collected a five on the final end of their first round encounter against Chalambar's Roger Young and Gary Todd to win, then claimed victory by the narrowest of margins when Waite drew a front toucher with the last delivery of their quarter final battle against John Simmonds and Graeme Pope from Yarra Glen.

Equally heroic was their two-shot semi final win over Wangaratta's Ian Brimblecombe and Robert Mitchell after trailing 6-14 with six ends to travel. A count of five on the 13th, followed by successive three's at 15 and 16, were interspersed by a single to the Wangaratta duo on the 14th. A single to Brimblecombe and Mitchell on the penultimate end made for dramatic viewing as the last end of the eliminator unfolded, and it was young Gallagher, who has impressed everyone with his ability and spotless demeanour, who planted the winning shot just millimetres from the jack.”

“In a withering burst of scoring in the second half of the final has seen Bundoora RSL's Nick McIntyre and Mario Cipolla claim victory in this year's Victorian Pairs Championship at Darebin City Bowls Club.

It was an amazing turnaround they defeated sentimental favourites Noel Waite and Brendan Gallagher from Auburn 20-13 in the 18-end final”

As you can see the Coach (Walrus) his protégée (Brendan) and the Auburn Club have again made their mark and we look forward to more exciting happenings next season.

Auburn Bowls ALMOST takes the Flag! PDF Print

After our great win we moved onto the quarter finals in the Division and the Saturdays bowling was interrupted by the fierce hailstorm. After playing only 54 ends it was decided to continue on the Sunday morning at 9:00am.  This proved in hindsight the possible reason for our missing out on making the grand final. We started the day 14 shots up and finished the remaining 46 ends and finishing in front to take us into the semi final to be held in Heathmont that afternoon.

The greens we played on at Burwood were a testament to the great work that the greenkeepers provide to be able to play again on the Sunday morning after the amount of rain and hail that fell on the Saturday was truly amazing.

We started the semi final with out having any practice on the green other than the standard roll up and found the green to be much slower than what we had at Burwood. ½ time found us 2 shots down and in the back half - unfortunately some of the team who weren’t as young as our opponents started to tire.

We eventually lost out to the team from Pakenham.

However it was a great season and to make it this far is a credit to ALL members of the Auburn Bowls Club, because now we are a group of serious bowlers who are keen to take the “Club” onto higher achievements.

We look forward to the upcoming season in Division 3 and would welcome any bowlers interested in joining is on our journey.

Check the photo section of the website for photos of our bowlers in action.
